Biography
Jean Cadell, also credited as Jean Dunlop Cadell, was a Scottish character actress. Born in Edinburgh, she made her professional stage debut in the early twentieth century and appeared in films from 1919. Her screen roles included Mrs. Pearce in the 1938 adaptation of Pygmalion, the postmistress in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945), Mrs. Campbell in Whisky Galore! (1949) and Mrs. Micawber in David Copperfield (1935).
Cadell maintained a career in both theatre and cinema, with a brief period working in Hollywood. She was married to actor Perceval Perceval-Clarke and had one son. Her brother was the painter Francis Cadell; she was also grandmother to actors Simon Cadell and Selina Cadell.
