Biography
Jeffrey Townsend is an American production designer, writer and director. Born in New York City on 14 May 1954, he studied at the Choate School, Bennington College and the San Francisco Art Institute. He began in print advertising before entering film as a production assistant on All That Jazz (1979) and later worked as an assistant to designers including Pato Guzman and Santo Loquasto.
Townsend’s first feature as production designer was the 1982 German television film Dear Mr. Wonderful. He went on to design After Hours (1985), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), Straight Talk (1992) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993), among others. He also wrote episodes for the first season of Rugrats (1991), for which he shared a Daytime Emmy Award, and has directed commercials.
Townsend has collaborated with directors including Martin Scorsese and John Sayles. He married Patrice Elaine Collins in 1993 and later moved to the Pacific Northwest.
