Jeremy Sisto is a strong ensemble actor, particularly when the part calls for someone troubled or difficult. We value that intensity, but his comedy makes us wish casting directors would not reach for it quite so automatically.

Put Jeremy Sisto among people who take themselves seriously and he is useful company. His breakthrough as Elton in Clueless (1995) placed him in Amy Heckerling’s comedy about teenagers preoccupied with clothes and status. The film depends on Alicia Silverstone’s earnest conviction, and Sisto fits an ensemble whose characters make those concerns worth laughing about. We like him in this setting, where emotional intensity has a comic use. The story loses momentum, but the company remains worth keeping.
Six Feet Under (2001) asks more of that intensity through Billy Chenowith, a recurring part that brought Sisto wider recognition. His emotionally complex supporting work helps a strong ensemble make the Fishers’ exhausting company worth the time. We laughed at the Fishers without feeling that their grief had become the joke. The actors make that distinction matter, though the programme’s fondness for brooding occasionally becomes an indulgence. This is the strongest reason to seek Sisto out: a demanding part within a drama that gives its actors more to do than announce distress.
The later television work moves between procedural drama and a lighter leading role. He played Detective Cyrus Lupo in Law & Order (2008), led Suburgatory (2011) as George Altman, and took the part of Jubal Valentine in FBI (2018). Dick Wolf productions became a recurring collaborator, but the sitcom is the useful reminder that solemnity is not a condition of employing him. Break Point (2014), which he co-wrote and produced as well as starring in, also gave him a hand in making the work.
The risk is that his suitability for troubled supporting characters becomes an excuse to keep casting him in them. We do not need every part to demonstrate something new, but familiar intensity needs a well-written character behind it. The comedy of Clueless and the ensemble demands of Six Feet Under provide two good starting points, with room for him to contribute without carrying everything. Having seen what lighter material can offer him, we would welcome another comedy before another troubled man.

Jeremy Merton Sisto is an American actor. Born on 6 October 1974 in Grass Valley, California, he moved to Chicago with his mother and sister after his parents' divorce. He began performing in theatre as a child and later studied at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Sisto is known for his role as Billy Chenowith in the HBO series Six Feet Under (2001–2005). His film credits include Clueless (1995), Thirteen (2003) and Wrong Turn (2003). On television he has appeared as Detective Cyrus Lupo in Law & Order (2008–2010) and as Jubal Valentine in FBI (2018–present). He also portrayed the title role in the 1999 television film Jesus.
