Biography
Jerome Moross (1913–1983) was an American composer of film and television scores, concert works, chamber music and musical theatre. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied at New York University and began composing early, later orchestrating for composers including Aaron Copland.
He composed original scores for sixteen films between 1948 and 1969. His best-known work is the music for The Big Country (1958), which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. Other film scores include The Proud Rebel (1958), The Cardinal (1963), The War Lord (1965), Rachel, Rachel (1968) and The Valley of Gwangi (1969). He also wrote the main theme for several seasons of the television series Wagon Train.
Moross achieved success on Broadway with the musical The Golden Apple (1954). He continued composing concert and stage works alongside his film and television assignments until his death in Miami, Florida.
