Biography
John Addison (1920–1998) was a British composer of film, television and concert music. Born in Chobham, Surrey, he studied at the Royal College of Music before serving as a tank officer in the Second World War. After the war he returned to the Royal College of Music, where he taught composition.
Addison is best known for his film scores, including Tom Jones (1963), for which he won an Academy Award, Torn Curtain (1966), Sleuth (1972), for which he received an Oscar nomination, and A Bridge Too Far (1977), for which he won a BAFTA. He also composed the main title theme for the television series Murder, She Wrote (1984) and wrote for the stage, including several John Osborne plays. He later moved to the United States and continued to compose for film and television.
