Biography
John Cavill is a New Zealand cinematographer. He entered the industry at the age of 17 after being inspired by a cameraman at a rugby league match while still at school. He began his career at the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, working across comedy, sport and other genres before specialising in action and visual effects sequences.
Cavill served as director of photography on Xena: Warrior Princess (1997–2001) and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995–1997). His later credits include Spartacus (2012–2013), Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2016), Sweet Tooth (2021–2023) and The Royal Treatment (2022). He has also contributed to the Lord of the Rings films in visual effects and second-unit roles.
In 2018 he received a Daytime Emmy Award for the documentary Scars of Nanking. He shared a Children's and Family Emmy for cinematography on Sweet Tooth.
