Biography
John Graysmark (26 March 1935 – 10 October 2010) was a British production designer. He began his career in 1956 as a draughtsman at MGM's British studios, following his father who worked as a construction co-ordinator at Elstree Studios. He spent twenty years in the art department on films including Lawrence of Arabia, The Guns of Navarone, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Young Winston.
Graysmark's first credit as production designer was Ragtime (1981). He received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction for Young Winston (1972) and Ragtime. His later credits as production designer include Flash Gordon (1980, as supervising art director), The Bounty (1984), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), White Hunter Black Heart (1990), Blown Away (1994) and Courage Under Fire (1996). He was president of the British Film Designers Guild.
