Biography
Frederick John Inman (28 June 1935 – 8 March 2007) was an English actor, comedian and singer. He trained at Cambridge House and began his career on stage in the late 1940s, later working in retail before returning to acting. He made his West End debut in the 1960s and appeared in several television series before gaining prominence in the 1970s.
Inman is best known for playing the camp menswear assistant Mr. Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972–1985) and its spin-off Grace & Favour (1992–1993). He was the only member of the original cast to reprise the role in an Australian version of the series. In 1976 he was named BBC TV Personality of the Year and TV Times readers' Funniest Man on Television. He was also a regular pantomime dame in British theatre.
