Biography
John Marriott was an American actor whose career in theatre, film and television spanned five decades. He began performing with the Karamu Players in Cleveland in the early 1920s before moving to New York, where he appeared in numerous Broadway productions from the 1930s onwards.
In 1939 he originated the role of Cal in the Broadway production of The Little Foxes. He reprised the part in the 1941 film adaptation directed by William Wyler. His other screen credits include The Joe Louis Story (1953), Black Like Me (1964) and Dog Day Afternoon (1975), in which he played Howard.
Marriott continued to work on stage into the 1970s, with his final New York appearance in The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia in 1976. He died in Jamaica, New York, in 1977.
