Biography
John Neschling is a Brazilian composer and conductor. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947, he studied conducting in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky and in Tanglewood with Leonard Bernstein. He returned to Brazil in 1973 and took up positions as music director of municipal theatres in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
In the 1970s and 1980s he composed scores for several Brazilian films, including Lúcio Flávio (1977), Pixote (1980) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985). He later became best known as an orchestral and operatic conductor, serving as chief conductor of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2008 and holding posts at opera houses in Europe.
