Biography
John Russell (1921–1991) was an American film and television actor. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, as a student athlete before serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War, where he received decorations for his service in the Guadalcanal campaign.
Russell began his screen career in the mid-1940s under contract with 20th Century Fox and later Republic Pictures. He gained prominence on television as the lead in the syndicated series Soldiers of Fortune (1955–1957) and as Marshal Dan Troop in the ABC Western Lawman (1958–1962). His film roles included Nathan Burdette in Rio Bravo (1959) and Bloody Bill Anderson in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976). He appeared in three films directed by Clint Eastwood, notably as the villainous Marshal Stockburn in Pale Rider (1985).
