Biography
John Shaffner is an American production designer and art director. Born in 1952 in Missoula, Montana, he holds a BFA from the University of Montana and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. He began his career in theatre before moving into television.
Shaffner has designed sets for numerous television series, often in collaboration with his long-term partner Joe Stewart. His credits include production design on Friends, Two and a Half Men (2003), The Big Bang Theory (2007), Roseanne and Dharma & Greg. He has also created stages for talk shows including those hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O’Brien, Rachael Ray and Dr Phil, as well as backdrops for Republican National Conventions.
Shaffner has received four Primetime Emmy awards from 31 nominations and multiple Art Directors Guild awards. He served as chairman of the Television Academy and of the Art Directors Council at the Art Directors Guild.
