Biography

John Shirley (born 10 February 1953) is an American novelist, short story writer and screenwriter whose work spans science fiction, horror and cyberpunk. Born in Houston, Texas, he began publishing in the 1970s and is associated with the early development of the cyberpunk genre through novels such as City Come A-Walkin' (1980) and the Eclipse trilogy.

His screenwriting credits include the initial drafts of the 1994 film The Crow and the teleplay for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode 'Visionary' (1995). He has also written for animated series including Batman Beyond, The Real Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012), the last of which earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination. Under the pseudonym John Cutter he wrote novels in the Specialist series, one of which was adapted into the 1994 film The Specialist.
