Biography
John Williams (15 April 1903 – 5 May 1983) was an English stage, film and television actor. Born in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, he began his career on the English stage as a teenager and made his Broadway debut in 1924. He appeared in more than thirty Broadway productions over four decades.
Williams is known for his role as Chief Inspector Hubbard in the Broadway production of Dial M for Murder, for which he received the 1953 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play, and for reprising the part in Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 film adaptation. He also played Brogan-Moore in Witness for the Prosecution (1957). His other film credits include roles in To Catch a Thief (1955), Sabrina (1954) and Midnight Lace (1960). On television he appeared in episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and as the second Mr French in the first season of Family Affair (1967).
Williams died in La Jolla, California, aged 80.
