Biography

Joseph Bernard (born Joseph Fieldman) was an American actor, director and acting teacher. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 12 December 1923, he studied at the New School for Social Research under Stella Adler and appeared in 25 Broadway productions from the late 1940s onwards.

His film roles include Maj. Abe Radnitz in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and Dr. Jack Benning in Ice Station Zebra (1968). On television he appeared in episodes of Star Trek (as Tark), The Twilight Zone, Get Smart and Mission: Impossible. He also directed for television and, with his son Sam Bernard, co-wrote the screenplay for the 1995 film Payback.

Bernard taught at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in Hollywood from 1968 and later ran his own acting studio in Las Vegas. He was married to Bina Rosenbaum from 1952 until her death in 2001 and died in New York City on 3 April 2006.
