Biography

Joseph Fürst (also credited as Joseph Furst) was an Austrian-born actor. He was born in Vienna on 13 February 1916 and died in Bateau Bay, New South Wales, Australia, on 29 November 2005.

In the 1950s he acted and directed on the Canadian stage. He later moved to England and appeared in numerous British films and television series during the 1960s and early 1970s. His film roles included Avidan in Exodus (1960), Capt. Hanselman in 55 Days at Peking (1963), Otto Lentz in The Brides of Fu Manchu (1966) and Professor Dr Metz in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). On television he played Zaroff in the Doctor Who serial The Underwater Menace (1967) and appeared in series such as The Saint and The Persuaders!. He also returned occasionally to Austria for stage work in Vienna and Salzburg.

Fürst emigrated to Australia in the mid-1970s and took guest roles in Australian television drama series.
