Biography
Joseph H. August (also credited as Joe August and Joseph August) was an American cinematographer. He was born on 26 April 1890 in Idaho Springs, Colorado, and died on 25 September 1947. He attended the Colorado School of Mining and entered the film industry in 1911.
August became a director of photography in the silent era and worked extensively with William S. Hart. He later collaborated frequently with John Ford. His credits include The Informer (1935), Gunga Din (1939), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), They Were Expendable (1945) and Portrait of Jennie (1948). He was one of the fifteen founders of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1919.
August served in the Office of Strategic Services during the Second World War. His son, Joseph S. August, also worked as a cinematographer.
