Biography
Joseph Sweeney (1884–1963) was an American actor who appeared in stage productions, films and television. He began his career on Broadway in the 1910s and continued working in theatre into the 1950s, alongside film and television roles often as grandfatherly or supporting characters.
His best-known performance was as Juror No. 9 in the 1957 film 12 Angry Men, a role he had originated in the 1954 live Studio One television adaptation of Reginald Rose’s teleplay. Other film credits include an uncredited butler in The Philadelphia Story (1940), the reverend in The Fastest Gun Alive (1956) and Edward M. Schultz in The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956). He remained active in television series until his death.
