Biography
Julia Kathleen Nancy McKenzie CBE is an English actress, singer, presenter and theatre director. She was born on 17 February 1941 in Enfield, Middlesex. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and began her career in the West End and on Broadway, where she performed under the name Julie N. McKenzie.
McKenzie is known for her work in musical theatre. She won Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical for Guys and Dolls (1982 revival) and Sweeney Todd (1993 revival) at the National Theatre. She received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Side by Side by Sondheim (1977).
On television she played Mrs Forrester in the BBC series Cranford (2007) and its sequel, Hester Fields in Fresh Fields (1984–1986) and Miss Marple in Agatha Christie's Marple (2009–2013). Her film roles include Shirley Valentine (1989), Bright Young Things (2003) and Notes on a Scandal (2006).
