Biography

June Whitfield was an English actress whose career spanned seven decades in radio, television and film. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her professional debut in the 1940s. Her big break came in 1953 as Eth in the BBC radio comedy Take It from Here.

On television she formed a long-running double act with Terry Scott in the sitcoms Happy Ever After (1974–1979) and Terry and June (1979–1987). She appeared in four Carry On films and played Mother, the long-suffering parent of Edina Monsoon, in Absolutely Fabulous from 1992, reprising the role in the 2016 film. Other credits include roles in Midsomer Murders, Agatha Christie's Marple and You, Me and the Apocalypse.

Whitfield was appointed CBE in 1998 and DBE in 2017. She died in London on 28 December 2018, aged 93.
