Kanu Banerjee

In Pather Panchali (1955), Kanu Banerjee’s priest Harihar Roy gives the household’s daily struggle a quiet adult weight. Beside him, Karuna Banerjee’s Sarbajaya Roy makes keeping the family going feel tiring and sometimes exasperating. Neither performance allows the adults to become mere background to the children’s discoveries. We were moved by the difference between their worries and the children’s pleasure, because Satyajit Ray lets us enjoy that curiosity without forgetting what it costs to keep a household going. Kanu’s restraint is well suited to that divided attention.

That understatement has roots in Bengali theatre and Banerjee’s work under Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. His screen career extended from silent films into the 1970s, often in supporting or character parts, while acting and directing on stage remained his primary commitment. Fathers, elders and religious figures recur in the work. In Bhagaban Sri Sri Ramakrishna (1955), he played the title role; international recognition came through Harihar in Ray’s films. He returned to the part in Aparajito (1956).

There is a limit to describing him simply as dignified: it can make an actor sound rather dull. In Pather Panchali, the dignity belongs to someone who still has to manage ordinary difficulties, and Karuna Banerjee’s impatience prevents the household from becoming too comfortable a place to watch. Ray does not smooth that strain away with affection. He gets something valuable from Kanu’s understated manner, but the sharper discomfort comes from his co-star.

The film occasionally drifts, and we would not recommend it to anyone wanting brisk storytelling. Subir Banerjee’s Apu and Uma Dasgupta’s Durga Roy give it movement through their curiosity rather than through much conventional plot. That leaves time for the adults’ efforts to register, and for a restrained performance such as Kanu’s to earn its place without having to insist on it. Start with Pather Panchali, and resist watching only for him.
