Karuna Banerjee makes a mother's impatience understandable without asking us to find it pleasant. Her Sarbajaya in Pather Panchali is remarkable for keeping a mother's exhaustion before us even when our attention follows the children.

In Pather Panchali (1955), the children have time to be curious; Karuna Banerjee's Sarbajaya Roy has a family to keep going. Even when we are watching Apu and Durga, her tiredness remains difficult to forget. Banerjee lets Sarbajaya be exasperated without suggesting that exasperation is all there is to her. We were moved by her fatigue, made harder to overlook by the children's freedom to enjoy the village. There is more to this woman than her responsibilities, but she cannot simply put them aside.
Satyajit Ray gives that performance room to be difficult, letting the strain remain uncomfortable rather than smoothing it away with affection. Alongside Kanu Banerjee's priest Harihar Roy, she makes the adults' work matter as much as the children's discoveries. The film's loose pace occasionally drifts. Yet Banerjee keeps us attentive because Sarbajaya's impatience feels like a response to the demands upon her, never a convenient way of telling us what sort of mother she is.
It was her film debut, and she returned as Sarbajaya in Aparajito (1956). Later Ray roles included Harasundari in Devi (1960) and Labanya Roy Chaudhuri in Kanchenjungha (1962). She also worked with Mrinal Sen, although leading parts became less frequent after the first two Apu films. Her reputation remains closely tied to Sarbajaya, and her roles often involved women managing family and social pressures. That makes it worth distinguishing between the kinds of parts she played and everything she might have been capable of playing.
Describing Sarbajaya merely as a long-suffering mother makes her sound easier to live with than Banerjee allows. It also gives too little credit to a performance that keeps an adult's frustration present in a film so attentive to children. We value the refusal to make her agreeable at every moment, and Ray's willingness to let that stand without reassurance. Begin with Pather Panchali, and do not watch only for Apu.
Biography
Karuna Banerjee (also credited as Karuna Banerji, Karuna Bandopadhyay and Karuna Bandyopadhyay) was a Bengali actress. She is best known for playing Sarbajaya Roy, the mother in Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali (1955) and Aparajito (1956). She was born on 25 December 1919 in Payogram, Khulna District, Bengal Presidency, British India, and died on 13 November 2001 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
She graduated from Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated women's college of the University of Calcutta. Banerjee appeared in other Ray films including Devi (1960) as Harasundari and Kanchenjungha (1962). Her performance in Aparajito earned a nomination for Best Actress at the 1959 BAFTA Awards. Her acting career in Bengali cinema and theatre spanned more than two decades.
