Kerry Bishé makes capable women interesting through the doubts they cannot quite keep off their faces. We rate her restrained work, though her supporting film parts offer only a partial account of what she can do.

In Halt and Catch Fire (2014–2017), Kerry Bishé lets Donna Clark's conflicting feelings show in small changes of expression. Donna is a computer engineer and entrepreneur, and Bishé makes her competence convincing without suggesting that she has everything under control. We rate that restraint: she makes the character's doubts apparent without insisting on our sympathy. The domestic scenes are particularly revealing, giving her room to make Donna complicated through glances rather than conspicuous displays of distress.
Her lead role as Lucy Bennett, narrator of the final season of Scrubs (2009–2010), came before supporting film work in Red State (2011) and Argo (2012). Ben Affleck's Argo casts her as Kathy Stafford, with Scoot McNairy as her husband, a pairing repeated in Halt and Catch Fire. The difference in how much time she gets matters. Four seasons let Donna develop in a way that a supporting role in a rescue thriller cannot.
Argo is a good film without being a particularly full introduction to Bishé. We were gripped by the rescue plot, even when its contrivances were conspicuous. Affleck keeps the suspense working, and Alan Arkin and John Goodman supply much of the life, though the central hero remains underwritten. Bishé belongs to an ensemble with a tightly organised story to serve, leaving less room for the domestic complexity that makes Donna worth following.
Madame Web (2024), with Bishé as Constance, is a much less rewarding film. SJ Clarkson's sluggish superhero origin story explains too much and gives too little attention to its women; Dakota Johnson's awkward humour offers occasional relief. Its shortcomings tell us more about the storytelling and fractured action than about what Bishé can do. Start with Halt and Catch Fire if the attraction is her acting, and with Argo if the evening calls for a tense thriller.
Biography
Kerry Bishé is a New Zealand-born American actress. She grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, graduated from Montclair Kimberley Academy in 2002 and studied at Northwestern University.
Bishé is best known for playing Donna Clark in the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire (2014–2017) and Lucy Bennett in the ninth season of Scrubs (2009–2010). She appeared as Kathy Stafford in the film Argo (2012) and as Constance in Madame Web (2024). Other credits include Red State (2011), Grand Piano (2013) and a recurring role in Narcos.
She is married to actor Chris Lowell and they have a daughter.
