Kim Hae-sook is a thoughtful supporting actor, particularly good at mothers who are not simply there to comfort. We value her restraint; the repeated maternal casting can make the work sound narrower than it is.

Kim Hae-sook does not treat playing a mother as an automatic claim on our sympathy. Her maternal figures can be warm or morally ambiguous, and she gives both kinds of woman attention without insisting on sentimentality. That restraint matters in an actor so frequently asked to play mothers. The danger is that familiar casting encourages us to assume we know the woman before she has done anything.
Her wider recognition came with Kim Soon-im in the television drama Autumn in My Heart (2000), after decades of television work. From the early 2000s, feature films became a larger part of her career without displacing television. Sunflower (2006) is an example of her ability to give a mother an individual temperament rather than settle for a collection of reassuring qualities. Thirst (2009), in which she plays Mrs. Ra, also put her in a Park Chan-wook ensemble.
In Park's The Handmaiden (2016), she plays Ms. Sasaki, though the film's strongest emotional work belongs to Kim Min-hee and Kim Tae-ri. We were moved by the romance because those two keep the lovers believable through all the elaborate plotting. Kim Hae-sook's steady supporting presence suits a thriller with so much going on, even when Park's camera seems too pleased with what it can show.
No Other Choice (2025) brings her back to Park as Ok Sang-yeo, this time in a cameo. We like the film's broad, precisely handled black comedy, while finding that it runs long and repeats itself. Lee Byung-hun does the central work, and the pictures often sustain our interest when the writing cannot. This is a smaller addition to Kim's work with Park, rather than the place to start looking closely at her acting.
Maternal roles remain central: in Our Season (2023), she plays Bok-ja, a mother returning from the afterlife. She has spoken of finding the familiar maternal label burdensome, and we can see why praise tied to one kind of role might become restrictive. Those parts still need to give her a particular woman to play, with something beyond affection to occupy her. Kim Hae-sook is a South Korean actress. She made her acting debut in 1974 in the MBC series Chief Inspector and has appeared in numerous television dramas and films.
She is known for roles in Thirst (2009), The Handmaiden (2016), Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017), Hope (2013) and No Other Choice (2025). She has collaborated several times with director Park Chan-wook. She has received multiple acting awards, including at the Grand Bell Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards, and was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 2025.
