Biography
L. Q. Jones (1927–2022) was an American character actor and director. Born Justus Ellis McQueen Jr. in Beaumont, Texas, he adopted his professional name from the character he played in his film debut, Battle Cry (1955). He appeared in numerous Westerns and other films over a career spanning more than five decades.
Jones became a regular member of Sam Peckinpah’s stock company of actors, with roles in Ride the High Country (1962), Major Dundee (1965), The Wild Bunch (1969), The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). He is also known for performances in Hang 'Em High (1968), Casino (1995) as Pat Webb, The Edge (1997), The Mask of Zorro (1998) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006).
He directed, wrote and produced the cult science-fiction film A Boy and His Dog (1975). Jones also worked extensively in television, including recurring roles in Western series such as The Virginian.
