Biography
Lee Grant (born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal on 31 October 1925 in New York City) is an American actress and director. She trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Her film debut came in Detective Story (1951) as a shoplifter, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.
Following her debut she was blacklisted for twelve years after refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Grant returned to acting with a recurring role in the television series Peyton Place (1965–1966), winning a Primetime Emmy Award. She played Mrs. Leslie Colbert in In the Heat of the Night (1967) and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo (1975). She has also directed, including the documentary Down and Out in America (1986), which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In 1963 she received an Obie Award for her performance in the stage production of The Maids. Her daughter Dinah Manoff is an actress.
