Biography
Lee Hwo-kyoung is a South Korean production designer. He studied printmaking at Hongik University and entered the film industry after a childhood interest in movie magazines. He began as a set designer in 2003 on Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder and Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, and made his debut as production designer in 2006 on the crime action film Sunflower.
He is known for his production design on films including The Yellow Sea (2010), Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013), The Wailing (2016), Tunnel (2016), The Battleship Island (2017), the series Kingdom (2019), Kingdom: Ashin of the North (2021) and Smugglers (2023). He received technical awards and art direction prizes for The Battleship Island at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Buil Film Awards and Blue Dragon Awards in 2017. His credits also include production design on Hope (2026).
