Biography
Les Tremayne was a British-born actor who worked in radio, film, theatre and television. Born Lester Tremayne in Balham, London, on 16 April 1913, he moved with his family to Chicago at the age of four. He began in community theatre, performed in vaudeville and worked as an amusement park barker before entering radio at the age of 17.
Tremayne was a prominent radio performer in the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in numerous programmes including The First Nighter Program. He later appeared in films such as The War of the Worlds (1953) as General Mann, Forbidden Planet (1956) as narrator (voice, uncredited) and North by Northwest (1959) as the Auctioneer. His television credits include episodes of Perry Mason, Bonanza and The Andy Griffith Show.
He was elected to the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. Tremayne died on 19 December 2003 in Santa Monica, California.
