Biography
Loretta Swit was an American actress. She played Major Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan on the television series MASH* (1972–1983).
Swit was born Loretta Jane Szwed in Passaic, New Jersey. She trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began her career in theatre before moving to television roles in series including Hawaii Five-O (1969), Mission: Impossible (1966) and Gunsmoke (1955). She appeared in the film Race with the Devil (1975).
For her performance in MASH*, Swit received ten consecutive Emmy Award nominations and won twice, in 1980 and 1982. She died in New York City on 30 May 2025.
