Biography
Ludwig Stössel was an Austrian actor. He began his stage career in Austria and Germany at the age of 17 and became a character actor on prominent Berlin stages, including those directed by Max Reinhardt. He appeared in German silent films from 1926 and continued into sound pictures.
Following the Nazi rise to power in 1933, Stössel, who was Jewish, left Germany for Austria and later emigrated via the United Kingdom to the United States, arriving in Hollywood around 1939. His American film debut came in 1940. He is noted for roles including Mr Leuchtag in Casablanca (1943) and Henry 'Pop' Gehrig in The Pride of the Yankees (1942), as well as appearances in Woman of the Year (1942), House of Dracula (1945) and television series such as Perry Mason.
Stössel was married to actress Eleanore Stössel from 1919. He died in Beverly Hills, California, in 1973.
