Biography
Mahalia Jackson (26 October 1911 – 27 January 1972) was an American gospel singer who appeared in several films and documentaries. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, she performed as a choir soloist in Imitation of Life (1959) and played herself in The Best Man (1964).
Her archive footage features in Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021) and 4 Little Girls (1997). Jackson recorded around 30 albums and was associated with civil rights events through her performances.
