Biography
Marcus Gardley is an American poet, playwright, television writer and screenwriter. He was born in 1977 or 1978 in Oakland, California, and studied at San Francisco State University before earning an MFA in playwriting from Yale School of Drama in 2004.
Gardley has written for television series including The Exorcist (2016), Mindhunter (2017), The Chi (2018), NOS4A2 (2019), Tales of the City (2019), Foundation (2021) and Maid (2021). He wrote the screenplay for the 2023 film The Color Purple and serves as co-chair of the playwriting programme at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University. His television writing on Maid contributed to a Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Longform Series – Adapted.
