Biography

Martin Mull (1943–2024) was an American actor, musician and painter. Born in Chicago, he studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, earning a BFA in 1965 and an MFA in 1967. He began performing as a satirical singer-songwriter in the early 1970s before moving into acting.

Mull first gained prominence playing Garth Gimble on the soap-opera parody Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976) and its spin-off Fernwood 2 Night (1977), in which he portrayed the character's twin brother Barth Gimble alongside Fred Willard. Film roles included Colonel Mustard in Clue (1985) and Justin Gregory in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993). He appeared in numerous television series, among them Roseanne, Two and a Half Men and Arrested Development.

Mull maintained a parallel career as a painter throughout his life. He was the subject of the 2026 documentary Who Is Martin Mull?.
