Biography
Martin Richards (born Morton Richard Klein; 11 March 1932 – 26 November 2012) was an American film and theatre producer. Born in the Bronx, New York City, he began his career as a child performer before working as a casting director and then moving into production.
He produced the original Broadway production of the musical Chicago in 1975 and the 2002 film adaptation, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Picture. Other film credits include The Boys from Brazil (1978), The Shining (1980, as associate producer) and Fort Apache, the Bronx (1981). On Broadway he produced multiple Tony Award-winning musicals, including Sweeney Todd (1979), La Cage aux Folles (1984) and The Will Rogers Follies (1991).
With his wife, Mary Lea Johnson Richards, he co-founded the Producer Circle Company.
