Biography
Masao Maruyama is a Japanese anime producer and entrepreneur. Born on 19 June 1941 in Shiogama, Miyagi, he entered the industry in 1965 at Mushi Productions before co-founding Madhouse in 1972. He served as the studio's president from 1980 and later founded MAPPA in 2011 and Studio M2.
Maruyama has produced or planned numerous television series and films over more than fifty years. His credits include Perfect Blue (1997) as producer, Ninja Scroll (1993), Death Note (2006), Millennium Actress (2002), Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000), Monster (2004) and In This Corner of the World (2016). He is noted for early collaborations with directors including Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda and Sunao Katabuchi. He is chairman of MAPPA and president of Studio M2.
