Biography
Mel Smith was an English actor, comedian and filmmaker. Born Melvyn Kenneth Smith on 3 December 1952 in Chiswick, London, he died on 19 July 2013.
He appeared as the Grenada Security Guard in the series The Young Ones (1982). Smith worked on the sketch comedy shows Not the Nine O'Clock News (1979–1982) and Alas Smith and Jones (1984–1998) with Griff Rhys Jones. He directed the film Bean (1997) and acted in The Princess Bride (1987) as the Albino and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) as the Hotel Manager.
With Rhys Jones he co-founded the production company Talkback.
