Biography
Memmo Carotenuto (born Guglielmo Carotenuto) was an Italian actor. He was born in Rome on 23 August 1908 and died there on 23 December 1980. The son of actor Nello Carotenuto and brother of actor Mario Carotenuto, he began performing in the theatre as a child in a Roman dialect company and later worked as a makeup artist before entering acting full time.
His first substantial film role was as the hospital patient in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D. (1952). He appeared in many Italian productions of the 1950s and 1960s, including an uncredited part in Bicycle Thieves (1948), Cosimo in Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), and Fernando in The Band of Honest Men (1956). He received the Nastro d'Argento for best supporting actor for his performance in The Bigamist (1955).
He was married to Nuccia Zappalà and was the father of actors Bruno Carotenuto and Nennella Carotenuto.
