Biography
Michael Asante, also credited as Mikey J or Michael 'Mikey' J Asante, is a British composer, producer and DJ. He co-founded the Olivier Award-winning hip-hop dance company Boy Blue in 2001, which is associate artists at the Barbican theatre, where he serves as a board member.
Asante received an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to hip-hop dance and music. He is an Honorary Fellow and Professor of electronic music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and a Governor at The Place theatre. He composes for film, television and theatre, and has worked with major-label artists.
His credits include the original scores for the film Kneecap (2024) and the series Criminal Record (2024). Other work includes Top Boy and African Queens: Njinga.
