Biography
Michael Bates was an English actor. Born in Jhansi, British India, he was educated at Uppingham School and St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and served as a major with the Gurkhas in Burma during the Second World War.
Bates appeared in numerous British films and television series. His film roles include Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery in Patton (1970), Chief Guard in A Clockwork Orange (1971), DS Spearman in Frenzy (1972) and Warrant Officer Warwick in Battle of Britain (1969). On television he played Cyril Blamire in Last of the Summer Wine (1973–1975) and Rangi Ram in It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974–1977).
