Biography

Michael Radford is an English film director and screenwriter. Born in New Delhi in 1946, he was educated at Worcester College, Oxford, and the National Film and Television School. He began his career directing documentaries and writing for television comedy before moving into feature films in the early 1980s.

His credits include the 1983 drama Another Time, Another Place, the 1984 adaptation Nineteen Eighty-Four, White Mischief (1987), B. Monkey (1998), Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000), The Merchant of Venice (2004), Flawless (2007), Elsa & Fred (2014) and The Music of Silence (2017). He also directed an episode of the series Homicide: Life on the Street in 1996.

Radford is best known for writing and directing the 1994 film Il Postino: The Postman, for which he received BAFTA Awards for Best Direction and Best Film Not in the English Language, as well as Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
