Biography
Michael Small (1939–2003) was an American film score composer. Born in New York City, he grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. His father, Jack Small, was an actor and general manager for the Shubert Organization. Small graduated from Williams College with a degree in English and studied for a year at Harvard University before receiving private music training with composer Meyer Kupferman.
He began scoring films with Out of It (1969) and became known for his work on thrillers, including Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974), The Stepford Wives (1975), Night Moves (1975) and Marathon Man (1976). Other credits include The Driver (1978), Pumping Iron (1977), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987). Small composed for more than fifty films and television productions.
