Biography
Michael Stipe is an American singer, songwriter and film producer, best known as the lead singer of alternative rock band R.E.M. He was born John Michael Stipe on 4 January 1960 in Decatur, Georgia.
Through his production company Single Cell Pictures, Stipe served as a producer on the 1999 film Being John Malkovich. He has also appeared in voice roles, including as Schnitzel in Olive, the Other Reindeer (1999) and as himself in episodes of The Simpsons (2001 and 2026).
As a member of R.E.M., Stipe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. He co-founded the film companies C-00 and Single Cell Pictures.
