Michaela Watkins makes difficult women funny without treating them as a nuisance. We value her most when a comedy gives her someone to listen to and enough time to show why the sharpness is there.
Fi1m perspective
In Nicole Holofcener’s You Hurt My Feelings (2023), Michaela Watkins plays Sarah, sister and confidante to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character. It is a useful place to see what she does well: she listens, reacts and makes a supporting character feel worth knowing. Her skill as a scene partner is a large part of her appeal. She fits an intimate ensemble because she seems interested in the person speaking to her, even when the characters have difficulties of their own.
Her television career moved from a single season of Saturday Night Live (2008–09) through the broader comedy of Jackie Fisher in Trophy Wife (2013) to Valerie Meyers in Casual (2015–18). The latter, produced by Jason Reitman, gave her a recently divorced therapist to sustain across four seasons. Her sketch and improvisation background serves both kinds of work, though the quieter parts offer more opportunity to notice her reactions. We would happily see more leading roles built around that patience.
Film roles have kept both possibilities open. Lynn Shelton’s Sword of Trust (2019) uses her as part of a character-driven comic ensemble, while Suze (2023) puts her at the centre as a mother whose daughter has left for college. The latter is the more promising kind of opportunity for an actor who can make a flawed woman sympathetic without tidying away her difficulties. The recurring sister and confidante parts suit her, but we would not want them to become the limit of what she is asked to do.
Heart Eyes (2025) gives her a supporting role as Crystal Cane under Josh Ruben’s direction, though our recommendation rests chiefly on its leads. We warmed to the film because Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding make the romance persuasive and supply enough laughter to carry us through its slower plotting. Its scares are less convincing than its central pairing. It is an enjoyable bloody romantic comedy, but a supporting appearance in an ensemble is no guarantee of much time with the actor whose name brought us there. For more time with Watkins, start with Casual.
