Biography
Mike Figgis is an English film director, screenwriter and composer. Born in Carlisle, Cumberland, he grew up partly in Nairobi before returning to England and studying music in London. He began his career as a musician, playing in bands including one with Bryan Ferry, and later joined the experimental theatre group The People Show before forming his own company and incorporating film into multimedia productions.
Figgis made his feature debut with Stormy Monday (1988), which he wrote, directed and scored. His subsequent films include Internal Affairs (1990), Leaving Las Vegas (1995) – for which he received Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay – The Browning Version (1994), One Night Stand (1997), Timecode (2000) and Cold Creek Manor (2003). He has also directed episodes of television series including The Sopranos (1999) and The Affair (2014). Figgis was the founding patron of the independent filmmakers' community Shooting People.
