Biography
Miriam Karlin was a British actress. Born Miriam Samuels in Hampstead, London, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began her career in repertory theatre and cabaret before making her London stage debut in 1946.
She became widely known for playing the militant shop steward Paddy in the BBC sitcom The Rag Trade (1961–63). Her film roles included appearances in Room at the Top (1959), The Entertainer (1960), A Clockwork Orange (1971) as the Catlady, Mahler (1974), The Man Who Cried (2000) and Children of Men (2006). She was appointed OBE in 1975.
