Mone Kamishiraishi makes teenage embarrassment worth taking seriously. Her voice work in Your Name. is funny without making discomfort cute, and gives us good reason to follow her between animation, live-action films and the stage.

In Your Name. (2016), Mone Kamishiraishi makes the confusion of body swapping feel awkward rather than cute. She voices Mitsuha Miyamizu opposite Ryunosuke Kamiki’s Taki Tachibana, and both performances keep the predicament personal. We laughed at the physical confusion because neither performer makes the teenagers sound comfortable with being amusing. Kamishiraishi gives Mitsuha enough vulnerability for the discomfort to matter after the joke. We rate her here for keeping someone worth caring about at the centre of an elaborate romance.
The work before that breakthrough already involved both acting and singing. Wolf Children (2012) provided an early voice credit, while her lead role as Haruko Saigo in Lady Maiko (2014) also involved performing the theme song. Your Name. brought wider recognition, but her subsequent work has continued across live-action films, television and theatre. Her parts include Chihiro in stage productions of Spirited Away and Misa Fujisawa in All the Long Nights (2024). There is good reason to look beyond the recording booth, even if Mitsuha remains the firmest basis for our recommendation.
Shinkai gives her and Kamiki a useful comic difficulty: each character must manage a life that has abruptly become somebody else’s responsibility. Their performances keep the body swapping tied to that inconvenience, helping the feelings remain clear as the plot grows complicated. The direction is less restrained about the jokes, sometimes continuing the business after the laugh has come. There are stretches when the storytelling asks for more concentration than the romance needs. Kamishiraishi helps keep us interested in Mitsuha even when we would welcome a simpler route through the story.
Speaking about voice work for an art exhibition audio guide, she has said, “The most important thing is to be conscious of putting your heart into the subject you are voicing.” Mitsuha makes that fairly plain advice convincing: Kamishiraishi takes the embarrassment seriously enough for us to care about the person experiencing it. Start with Your Name. for her and Kamiki, with a little patience for the plot.
Biography
Mone Kamishiraishi is a Japanese actress, voice actress and singer. She was born on 27 January 1998 in Kagoshima, Japan, and is the older sister of actress Moka Kamishiraishi. She is affiliated with Toho Entertainment.
Kamishiraishi won the Special Jury Prize at the 2011 Toho Cinderella Audition and made her acting debut in theatre and on television that year. She received the Newcomer of the Year award at the 38th Japan Academy Prize for her role in the 2014 film Lady Maiko.
She is known for voicing Mitsuha Miyamizu in the animated films Your Name. (2016) and Weathering with You (2019), as well as roles in Wolf Children (2012), Drowning Love (2016) and the series An Incurable Case of Love (2020). She has also appeared in live-action films such as the Chihayafuru series and performs in musical theatre.
