Biography
Monty Woolley was an American actor. Born Edgar Montillion Woolley in New York City, he began his career as a professor before turning to stage and screen work in the late 1920s.
He achieved prominence at the age of 50 with his stage performance as Sheridan Whiteside in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939), which he reprised in the 1942 film adaptation. Woolley received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his role as John Sidney Howard in The Pied Piper (1942) and for Best Supporting Actor as William Smollett in Since You Went Away (1944). His other notable film appearances include The Bishop's Wife (1947) and Midnight (1939). He was known for his distinctive white beard and continued working in films until the mid-1950s.
