Nathan Jones

Nathan Jones can be disconcertingly quick for someone cast so often to loom over other actors. His fight work depends on speed and impact, and he performs his own stunts. That makes him useful in action films, though it also makes him easy to cast without much thought. We rate him as a physical performer; the parts have seldom offered much beyond an imposing antagonist.

The pattern was established before George Miller. Troy (2004) gave him Boagrius, a limited antagonist role alongside Brad Pitt, while The Protector (2005) put him into an extended fight opposite Tony Jaa. The latter is a useful place to see how well he handles fight choreography. These parts use his physical skills, but offer little escape from the usual antagonist casting.

As Rictus Erectus in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), he gets a more particular kind of menace. The character's childlike simplicity makes his strength unsettling, and Jones is effective at keeping both qualities visible. We were exhilarated by the desert chase because Miller kept the action clear even at its most frantic. That clarity matters for a performer whose work is largely physical: we can follow the action rather than merely register a succession of collisions. Charlize Theron gives the film its purpose, though several supporting characters could still have used more attention.

He reprises Rictus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), again directed by Miller. We recommend it more cautiously: the middle hour has real invention, but the digital sand and the need to explain its central woman make it less satisfying than Fury Road. Jones fits this world, although returning to the same character offers little evidence of what different casting might bring. We would welcome a director who gives him a difficult conversation.
