Nicky Guadagni brings a forceful presence to supporting roles in horror and science fiction. We value that intensity in Cube, though the ensemble sometimes overdoes it.

In Cube (1998), being confined with other people becomes almost as troubling as the lethal rooms. Nicky Guadagni's Holloway belongs to an ensemble that has to keep distinct personalities visible while the audience works on the puzzle. Her intensity helps, but Vincenzo Natali's cast sometimes presses an argument harder than it needs to. We were unsettled by the need to trust people whose judgement looked doubtful, which gave the conversations a tension beyond the threat of the traps. Guadagni has useful company in Nicole De Boer, Maurice Dean Wint and David Hewlett: the shifting loyalties keep their exchanges alive even when the acting becomes too broad.
Her screen work offers no tidy progression from small parts to leading ones. The earlier Crash (1996) gives her the role of the Tattooist in David Cronenberg's erotic thriller, where the performances remain committed even when the repetitions begin to tire. We recommend it, though its emotional distance is a real obstacle. Cube gives her more responsibility within its group, and also makes the risks of forceful acting more apparent: keeping a character distinct can become a matter of insisting on every difference.
The supporting work continued through films and television in the 2000s and 2010s, with room for several characters within the same programme. In A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001), she played multiple roles, a repertory arrangement that suits an actor accustomed to establishing a supporting character. As Aunt Helene Le Domas in the horror-comedy Ready or Not (2019), she has a prominent, openly eccentric part. That casting makes sense for a performer whose intensity can make a supporting figure difficult to overlook.
We do not need every argument in Cube played at full force. The trapped characters are already under enough pressure, and the broader acting can make them tiresome while the puzzles remain absorbing. We prefer the exchanges in which the group must decide whom to trust, giving Guadagni and her colleagues something more useful to play than distress alone. Start with Cube, provided a few overextended arguments will not spoil the pleasure of a resourceful thriller.
Biography
Nicky Guadagni is a Canadian actress. She trained in drama at Dawson College in Montreal and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Her first professional role after graduation was as Miranda in a West End production of The Tempest opposite Paul Scofield.
Guadagni has appeared in numerous film and television roles. She played the Tattooist in Crash (1996), Holloway in Cube (1997), Aunt Helene in Ready or Not (2019), and Mrs Petersen in Lars and the Real Girl (2007). Her television credits include appearances in Goosebumps (1995), Storm of the Century (1999), Silent Hill (2006), Reacher (2022) and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022). She has received two Gemini Awards for her television work.
