Biography
Noel Johnson (1916–1999) was a British actor. Born Noel Frank Johnson on 28 December 1916 in West Bromwich, England, he served with the Royal Army Service Corps during the Second World War, was evacuated from Dunkirk and invalided out in 1941. He joined the BBC Drama Repertory Company in 1945 and became best known as the voice of special agent Dick Barton on BBC radio from 1946 to 1949, later returning for a 1972 series. He also voiced Dan Dare on Radio Luxembourg.
Johnson appeared in numerous films and television dramas from the 1950s to the 1990s. His film roles include the Doctor in Pub in Frenzy (1972), Connaught in The First Great Train Robbery (1978), Vice Admiral in For Your Eyes Only (1981) and the General in Withnail & I (1987). Television credits include appearances in Doctor Who, Inspector Morse and A Touch of Frost.
